Validating colour contrasts in moodboards (Pro feature)

Ensure an accessible colour design by checking for important colour contrast criteria

You can easily verify the contrasts between the colours in your moodboard in NCS+ on the Web. This is especially important in public spaces, where visual contrasts between building elements are often stipulated in building regulations, but can also be a good aspect to consider in any colour setting.

On the Web

  1. Navigate to Boards
  2. Click on the moodboard you want to work with
  3. Click on either Freeform or Colour Space in the sub menu
  4. Click on the colour you want to validate contrasts against
  5. In the contextual menu that appears above the colour, click on the Contrasts icon
  6. In the pop-up that appears, select the contrast type you want to use
    • NCS Lightness: The absolute NCS lightness difference between two colours, a contrast type that is for example referenced in Swedish (BBR 2011) building regulations
    • LRV difference: The absolute LRV (Light Reflectance Value) difference between two colours, a contrast type that is for example referenced in UK (BS8300) building regulations
    • Luminance contrast: Based of off the LRV values, the luminance contrast between two colours, a contrast type that is for example referenced in German (DIN) building regulations
  7. The colour you have selected will be compared to the other colours in your moodboard side-by-side and next to each comparison, the contrast is displayed along with a checkbox or cross indicating if the two colours pass the selected contrast type.

Tip: If you want to see only the pairs that passes the selected contrast type, check the "Show only passed" checkbox in the top-right corner.

Disclaimer: The pass/fail criteria are only to be seen as indications of whether or not the two colours will contrast well enough against each other and is not a guarantee that the actual application of the two colours on any particular application of the two colours will pass inspection.
